Can you tell me about your course? Sure, I’m Farmina, and I am studying CGI and Animation, specialising in modelling and character design.
That sounds really interesting! Are you enjoying your course? Yeah I am, I love doing what I do, I’m really passionate about it, and I find it really interesting because there is so much to learn about this one type of animation.
How would you describe your working environment? Well I spend 9 hours a day surrounded by computer screens! So it can be tiring! But if it's somthing you enjoy all that time flys by. Which is a good thing because sometimes I don’t feel like I’m taken seriously in the workplace.
Why is that? Well I’m the only girl on my course and so sometimes I feel like I’m not taken as seriously by my colleagues. Being South Asian, I’m also the only minority on my course so I guess I stand out.
I see, that lack of diversity must be difficult. Why do you think you’re the only girl in your class? Thinking about 3D Animation, it’s only been progressive the past 10 years so it’s originally a male dominated industry. It makes sense why there are not many girls are on my course. However, more and more women are being represented in the CGI industry, so I hope more girls will start to take an interest like myself.
“Women have done so much for our rights...don’t allow others to stop you pursuing your dreams”
Do you have any advice for anyone else who might feel out of place in their field, or social groups? Moving from London to Bournemouth and not knowing anyone did feel isolating at times. On top of that, being the only girl and poc did feel like the icing on top of a shit cake!! However, I decided to embrace this opportunity. Remember that your ethnicity nor your gender defines you. Yes they’re apart of your identity, but they should not stand in the way of who you want to be. Although, I am not your convential computer-gaming student, I am still an animator who loves what she does. So don’t allow stereotypes to stand in your way. This message is especially for women though, because women have done so much for our rights, so don’t get put into a box and don’t allow others to stop you pursuing your dreams.
