Can you tell me about your job? I am an Artist Manager and Press and Promotions Assistant.
How long have you been doing it? Just over a year now. I got into it whilst I was at uni so I’d say about 4-5 years now....but my first proper paid job I’d say just over a year.
Would you say there's dominant gender in your field? 100% the music industry is male dominated like most industries. Women definitely have to work 10x harder.... black women at that! That’s a whole different story.
Do you think you’ve been treated fairly in your workplace? I believe in most cases yes, but I have been in situations where I feel like I wouldn’t have been treated like this if I wasn’t a woman or a black woman at that. Which is a shame but that’s how the Cookie crumbles.
Have you over come any challenges being a black woman in the industry? 100% I think companies and work places like to preach about diversity however, they tend to lack that the most. It got to a point where I’d go to interviews and if I didn’t see someone like me, that looked like me I’d start getting anxiety about the role and already foreseeing scenarios that would take place once I landed the role.
Have you over come any challenges being a young woman in industry? I think everyday is a challenge so definitely. I think as women like I said I, you always have to work 10x hard just to be taken seriously. Especially in my industry, I often feel like people have a misconception of why you do the job you do.
What is the most exciting thing you’ve done in your job? Everyday is super exciting, no day is the same. I definitely think being apart of some of my favourite artists campaigns is my highlight. Having a vision and seeing it come to life and it being loved by millions of fans around the world is super exciting.
“When people say yout network is your net-worth they are not lying.”
What advice do you have for others wanting to go into your field? Work work work, do all the necessary ground work you need to do. It really taught me a lot. It’s frustrating sometimes because you work so hard and sometimes see your success at a later date but it’s definitely rewarding. And NETWORK, when people say your network is your net-worth they are not lying. Go out and meet people in the industry you want to work in. Build those relationships.
If you could change one thing about your job what would it be?I wouldn’t change a thing. I think all the challenges I face/come across, have/are helping me be the woman I am today. It’s all a learning curveand it all teaches me a lot about myself.
